Shortly after Christ saved me I was introduced to the music of Bill Pierce. The mellow tone of his trombone and the gentle voice of this dear man helped me through many sleepless nights. It was in his radio program originally called ‘Nightwatch’ and later ‘Nightsounds’, I found comfort and solace during the early struggles of my Christian life. I’m looking forward to the day when I will see this man in eternity and thank him for staying up late and ministering to my weary soul.
Last night at Prayer Meeting we considered someone else who stays up late and soothes the hurting heart and protects us from unseen dangers. “Behold, he that keepeth Israel shall neither slumber nor sleep.” Psalm 121:4. The poet identifies Him as ‘Jehovah’. He is the One Who watches over, He is the One Who sets a hedge about the children of Israel. This same God Who keeps His eye on the children of Israel is the One Who watches over you. This does not mean you will never experience pain, but it does mean there is an all-powerful God Who is superintending over everything you will experience. And because He never sleeps or slumbers, He doesn’t miss a thing. So by His grace and power and presence, He shall set a hedge about your eternal soul (Psalm 121:7).
“Safe am I, Safe am I, In the hollow of His hand;
Sheltered o’er, sheltered o’er With His love forever more.
No ill can harm me, No foe alarm me,
For He keeps both day and night,
Safe am I, Safe am I, In the hollow of His hand.”

Think about it. Better yet, tonight as the pains of this day cause you to toss and turn, sing this little chorus. Then thank God for His care, rollover and close your eyes… ‘for so He giveth His beloved sleep.’ Psalm 127:2.
