It’s a roller coaster ride!

Ever had one of those weeks?  I know you have.  Emotionally they can be draining.  I remember standing in line to ride a roller coaster at Cedar Point.  Stood in line for 45 minutes – hearing all the squeals of delight coming from the ride before us and others around us.  The anticipation grew each time we heard the cars whizzing overhead.  Did I mention that we waited in line for 45 minutes?

And then our turn came.  You step into a ‘car’ designed by short skinny people – your knees are pressed into the car in front of you and the bar across your lap makes a permanent impression.  But, hey, you’re really pumped now, because the ride is about to begin.  The first few feet start with a jerk, you round a corner and then begins the climb.  ‘Chunka, chunka, chunka’ as you slowly climb to the top of the 200 foot hill.  Trying to look like you’re not afraid, you scan left and right – on the left 50,000 people begin to look like ants scrambling for dropped popsicles, on the right is the vast expanse of Lake Erie and on a clear day…Canada!  ‘Chunka, chunka, chunka’ and… hesitation as the string of cars are perfectly balanced on either side of the peak.  Thoughts flood your mind… ‘Dumb idea, dumb idea…’, ‘Wonder if this coaster car was built on a Monday or a Friday?’, ‘Can I get out now?’, ‘Momma!!!’ and then it happens.  The fall begins and quickly you reach speeds up to 72 mph hour and are whipped from side to side, up and down and there are people before and after you, who I’m sure are normally very rational, screaming their lungs out with hands reaching to the sky.  Now over the lake, next over the 50,000 ants, back up a hill, then picking up even greater speed.  And finally… 72 seconds later, you come to an abrupt halt, glad to be alive and thinking about riding it one more time, but… Did I mention the wait in line is 45 minutes?

Sometimes a week of life is like this…funerals and maternity wing visits.  A friend loses a job and another has just been hired.  This person just received Christ and another walks away from the church without an explanation.  One child is on the Dean’s List and this one spent time in the principal’s office.  You just finished painting the outside of the house and you discover the water heater is leaking badly.  ‘Can I get out now?’  ‘Momma!!!’

Friend, it’s not just you; it’s not just in 2016.  Listen to the sweet psalmist of Israel. “O LORD, thou hast searched me, and known me. Thou knowest my downsitting and mine uprising, thou understandest my thought afar off.  Thou compassest my path and my lying down, and art acquainted with all my ways.”  Psalm 139:1-3

When you are riding the roller coasters of life, it is so comforting to know your are not alone.  “Whither shall I go from thy spirit? or whither shall I flee from thy presence?  If I ascend up into heaven, thou art there: if I make my bed in hell, behold, thou art there.  If I take the wings of the morning, and dwell in the uttermost parts of the sea; Even there shall thy hand lead me, and thy right hand shall hold me.”  Psalm 139:7-10.

Think about it.
