Looking back – Looking ahead

Even while you are preparing for company coming tonight or tomorrow, there are moments when alone in your thoughts you discover yourself looking back… and looking ahead.  Two ‘Words’ from God come to mind.

Looking back. Joel 2:25, “And I will restore to you the years that the locust hath eaten, the cankerworm, and the caterpiller, and the palmerworm, my great army which I sent among you.”  Israel had wasted a lot of years due to sin, disobedience, mistakes, judgment, etc.  This past year we have all wasted those great gifts from God of time and opportunities.  We can sit and stew about them…wasting more time.  Or we can confess our sins, accept that the blood of Jesus Christ cleanses from all our sins and know that the God of the universe who created the world in six days can overcome all our failures of 2016.  I don’t know how He did it, but the God of Israel restored their wasted years.   I don’t know how He does it, but He can do the same for you and me now.  Somehow the Almighty God can make up for all my wasted times of this past year.  Yours, too!  End this year with 1 John 1:9 and watch the power of God.

Looking ahead.  John 10:4, “And when he putteth forth his own sheep, he goeth before them, and the sheep follow him: for they know his voice.”  Just as you look back in faith, you must look ahead.  What will 2017 hold for you?  Promotion or loss of work?  Better health or extended illness?  A renewed friendship or the loss of an old friend?  No one but God can predict the future.  We can only make our best guess knowing everything is subject to change.  Everything except that the Good Shepherd Who prepares ‘a table before me in the presence of my enemies’ is also the One Who goes before me.  Here then is the promise of God in 2017, our Lord Jesus is already there, preparing the way, waiting for us to follow.  You need not fear, only trust and follow Him.

Whether you spend time today or tomorrow ‘Looking back’ or ‘Looking ahead’, know this… “The eternal God is thy refuge, and underneath are the everlasting arms…”

Think about it.
