While reading in the book of Proverbs today, I ran across a note I made perhaps ten years ago. It simply reads, ‘Strife in the home?’ and then lists several verses…
Proverbs 13:10, “Only by pride cometh contention:…”
1 Corinthians 3:3, “For ye are yet carnal: for whereas there is among you envying, and strife, and divisions, are ye not carnal, and walk as men?”
James 4:1, “From whence come wars and fightings among you? come they not hence, even of your lusts that war in your members?”
Ephesians 4:26-31, “Be ye angry, and sin not: let not the sun go down upon your wrath:… Let him that stole steal no more:… Let no corrupt communication proceed out of your mouth… Let all bitterness, and wrath, and anger, and clamour, and evil speaking, be put away from you, with all malice:…”
Looking at all of these together, it’s pretty easy to see why there would be contention in our homes: Pride – we’re always right! Carnal – we live according to our feelings. Lust – we have uncontrolled desires. Unresolved anger – we carry it into the next day. Stealing – or we live selfishly. Corrupt communication – we attack others with words. Uncontrolled anger – we blow up, yell and have a foul mouth. When we allow our pride, our feelings, our desires, our anger, our selfish nature and our words to go unchecked, there will certainly be strife, quarreling, fighting, a lack of peace in our homes.
In some of our homes, strife pops up once in awhile and we either resolve it or sweep it under one of the rugs until the next time. But I’m afraid in some homes, strife is not an occasional visitor, but a permanent resident. Oh, how sad and so unnecessary. I have seen it in your children’s eyes, I can tell by the way you handle difficulties at work and some of you even stay longer at work just so you don’t have to face it at home.
Jesus said, “Peace I leave with you, my peace I give unto you: not as the world giveth, give I unto you. Let not your heart be troubled, neither let it be afraid.”, John 14:27. He wasn’t just talking about peace in your heart, but the good news is this kind of peace can fill your home. Next time we meet, I’ll share with you more how to bring that kind of peace into your home. But for now, let’s identify and evict out of our homes this unwelcome resident called ‘Strife’.
Think about it.
